1895. Defendant 47 is on trial. He doesn't know why. The judge and the lawyers help him, reminding him that he is a photographer who knows something about a murder.

Defendant 47 is on trial. His judge and lawyers are asking him questions he apparently can't answer. He just remembers a few details, where he's been recently, and glimpses of the past. He may have lost his memory. He also suffers from narcolepsy, so he tends to fall asleep right in the middle of the hearing. Despite all this, defendant 47 slowly begins to remember. His name is Charles Dee. He is a scientist, a mathematician, he teaches his students numbers and rules. One day, for the first time, he enters a photographer's studio. He comes into contact with photography, the new science and art, and is immediately involved in this new tool for understanding the human being. He befriends Mr. Niepce, the owner of the studio. Their friendship grows to the point that Mr. Niepce, stricken with ailment, asks defendant 47 to lead the study. Now defendant 47 begins to take his passion for photography seriously and meets a new friend, Mr. Lewis Cellar, who is also interested in art. Together they develop new methods of taking photographs, to freeze a frame forever. Their favorite subject is childhood, the human being caught in a moment of perfection. So they start photographing children. This is how Mr. Dee meets Ellen Rhodes, the mother of one of his favorite subjects. And this encounter brings everything to a dark conclusion.
